BetterJoy Comparisons: Every Alternative, Judged Honestly

BetterJoy is free, focused, and — since the original line settled at v7.1 in 2021 — no longer the only game in town. Steam Input learned Joy-Cons, emulators learned native gyro, a paid mapper out-polishes everything, and two hardware adapters promise to delete the driver question entirely. This hub is our honest map of that field: five head-to-head comparisons and two decision guides. Every verdict follows the same rules — prices only where verified, manufacturer claims labelled as claims, and one fact repeated wherever it matters: no route in this space passes NFC/amiibo or the Joy-Con IR camera to a PC, and rumble support never means HD Rumble fidelity. New here? The download page has the software itself; the tutorials hub has the setup walkthroughs.

The head-to-heads

  • BetterJoy vs Steam Input — Valve’s free built-in covers Pro Controllers (2018) and Joy-Cons (2022) inside Steam; BetterJoy owns everything outside it, plus the DSU server. The territory split, and the double-input peace treaty.
  • BetterJoy vs DS4Windows — two free DSU-capable mappers on the same driver stack, opposite home turf. If DS4Windows already runs your PlayStation pads, you may not need both.
  • BetterJoy vs reWASD — the polished paid mapper (Lifetime from €34.99) wins on remapping depth across 100+ devices, but it is not a DSU server. Who should pay, and who shouldn’t.
  • BetterJoy vs 8BitDo USB Adapter 2 — the dongle deletes drivers from your life, with one documented catch: gyro only in Switch mode; XInput mode passes rumble only. Plus the Ultimate Software naming trap.
  • BetterJoy vs Mayflash MAGIC-NS 2 — the cross-console adapter. Its XInput-mode gyro is a manufacturer claim we label as such; its versatility across PC and consoles is the verifiable reason to buy.

The 2026 decision

  • Do you still need BetterJoy in 2026? — the scenario matrix: Steam-only (probably not), Cemu/Dolphin native SDL (optional), Ryujinx-family dual-Joy-Con motion (yes, still required), non-Steam system-wide output and gyro-to-mouse (yes).
  • The best way to use a Switch controller on PC — every route ranked by scenario and budget: free and native, free software, paid software, adapter hardware — and the limits they all share.
